SPIDERS

SPIDER PEST CONTROL IN SOUTHERN UTAH

There are over 4,000 different species of spiders in North America, and Southern Utah is home to 621 of them. While each of those species has venom, only a few types of Southern Utah spider bites can cause sickness in people: the black widow, hobo, wolf spider, yellow sac, camel, and huntsman. Their bites can be very painful and will likely require a trip to the ER.

Most spiders try to avoid humans and will not attack unless threatened. They like open air and dry heat. A few types—like the yellow sac spider—prefer dark, secluded nooks and may be holed up in the corners and crevices of your house.

HOW TO AVOID A SPIDER INFESTATION

Even if a spider is harmless, no one likes having it in their home. Spider bites can cause allergic reactions, and their webs are a nuisance. Here are a few simple tips you can follow to keep spider infestations at bay.

  • 1. Declutter your home. Piles of old newspapers or magazines, dirty clothes, and old boxes all provide the perfect cover for spiders to scurry and hide in.
  •

  • 2. Fix any torn window screens, put rubber seals in the gaps under doors, and fill any cracks or holes with caulk.
  •

  • 3. Avoid leaving the porch light on at night. The light attracts all kinds of bugs and insects, and wherever there are insects and bugs, spiders are soon to follow.
  •

  • 4. Get rid of any plants or shrubs right next to your home. Plants are likely to harbor spiders and other insects, and whenever those pests find an opening, they will enter the house.
  •

  • 5. Avoid leaving food out in the open at night. Cover everything or place it in Tupperware and store it in the fridge. Again, food out in the open attracts insects like flies, ants, and cockroaches, and that is a feast for spiders.
  •

  • 6. With a broom or vacuum, get rid of any spider webs or egg sacs you see. Do not give them a chance to multiply.
